Sidewalk Chalk Activities
Let’s be honest, sometimes it’s hard to get kids off of their devices and outside, let alone excited about it!
Well I have found one thing that gets my kids (and me) excited to get outside is playing with sidewalk chalk, and not just drawing with it. I love creating interactive games with it and it’s so easy and entertaining.
First up is an obstacle course. You can get as creative and complex or as basic and simple as you want, or to meet your child’s age and/or ability.
Some examples of things I like to include are:
walking like an animal (bear, frog, kangaroo, crab, you choose what their favorite animal is)
spinning - I draw corkscrews to show this action
hopscotch
arrows to show which way to walk or jump
x marks the spot, to show a jump
squiggly or funny lines to make them move in different directions
feet (any kind) to show jumping or hopping on one foot
parallel lines to show you have to straddle them while you walk
Another game I love to draw for my kids with sidewalk chalk is a target game. You can draw a bullseye with different points for each circle you draw or you can draw separate circles and mark the circle closest to you the least amount of points and the one farthest away from you with the most points. I like to use squishy balls drenched in water for this, but you can also use water balloons or sponges as well.
And one last activity that I did for my youngest who is learning her letters, was to draw flowers with the letters in the middle. She took a watering can and “watered” the flowers when asked to identify letters. She had fun and I felt good because she was learning and enjoying herself!
